Steph Style: It might as well be spring →
stephstyle:
My friend Amy asked me for advice on how to dress for this week’s weather. Here in Wichita, it’s going to be over 50 degrees every day, with crazy highs of 63 on Wednesday and 74 on Thursday. Truth is, I don’t have a lot of experience dealing with unseasonable winter weather; back home in…

It's poppin' time for jalapenos
Summer is jalapeno season, and a couple of summers ago I started making poppers. I made some today, after collecting a couple of bags from our online guru at work.
This recipe is awesome. It’s easy but time consuming. Don’t try and skimp, however. The extra steps breading really are worth it. It says an hour, but if you’re doing it by yourself it takes more like two hours....

A Train memories: of Dad, the Duke and my... →
My stepdaughter lived near this subway stop in Harlem and when I went to visit her I was so excited that she’d “Take the A Train” every day. I’d grown up with this song. My father had just about the entire Duke Ellington collection and used to receive Christmas cards from the Duke after an interview they’d done many years earlier. I cut “Take the A...

Rehab of the knee more than taking 12 steps
I have been back home from the hospital a week and a day, and total knee replacement has turned out to be a painful process, although all reports say it will be worth it. The first week meant trying to do the simple leg raises and bends that Julie, my physical therapist, assigned me. Finishing them without throwing up was the major accomplishment. Bitching about the ordeal online caused confusion....

My wife's dream of malpractice
My wife had a dream last night that my upcoming knee replacement surgery went terribly wrong and I became disabled. She went to the bank to cash my disability check but found herself having to answer questions about what she was doing by Barney, Goober, Floyd the Barber and other people from Mayberry RFD.

An 8yo's discussion by my 10yo's birthday party
Noah: We celebrated my grandma's birthday. She's 37.
My wife: Honey, you grandma can't be 37
Noah: Well, she's about that. She's really old.

Magid: Let Twitter Into Federal Courts - CBS News →
Says Magid: Trials in America are the public’s business and, with rare exceptions, what is said in a trial is a matter of public record. Requiring reporters to rely on hand-written notes or their memory and filing reports during breaks does nothing to add to our understanding of what is happening in the courtroom.
A Ron Sylvester joint
I still remember the “pop” in my knee on a spring day in 1973. I was a freshman in high school, who had made the varsity track team. I was in my last practice for the first meet, where I would be running against juniors and seniors.
The doctor said I tore a cartilage. But I woke up from surgery with a cast from my ankle to my hip. Not only did I have cartilage damage, but I also...

Do you still have a job?
I have spent a lot of time this week contacting my friends all over the country, some I’ve know for 30 years, who work in journalism, asking them that question. Fortunately, we all survived the latest round of layoffs. But I’ve watched other dear friends pack up their desks this year. Most have done so with a smile. They will still continue journalism, albeit on their own, working...
